Mykonos
Sunday, April 25, 2010
Sleeping late, leisurely breakfast, checking out the on board ship gym -- we all chose to spend our morning in different ways. We won’t arrive in Mykonos until almost 3:00 pm, so we find ways to fill up our day, mostly involving eating. There’s a port talk, a cooking demonstration and a few other activities planned by the crew.
At about 2:45 we watched the coast of Mykonos approaching and prepared to make our way off the ship. Rhonda and Brian chose to rent a couple of motor scooters and tour the island. Joanne took the shuttle into town for some shopping. Mary Ann and Jerry, Augie and I, and Shelli walked the three kilometers into town, talking pictures of the beautiful Aegean and scenery along the way. We don’t knew yet what Karen and Dave did.
What strikes you first about Mykonos is the bright, white washed buildings that cover the hills along the coast. When you get closer, you notice the bright blues, reds, and turquoise doors and windows. The streets are very narrow and covered with stones with white wash in between. Jewelry, clothing, and souvenir shops line every street, with plenty of cafes and bars in between. We wandered up and down, in and out the maze of streets until we thought we might be lost. Then we’d see the sparkling Aegean ahead of us regain our bearings.
We made it to the top of the hill with the windmills, took lots of pictures, and came back down to find an internet café. After checking our emails and posting yesterday’s blog, we came back to the coast to Mary Ann’s favorite restaurant, Katrina’s, for drinks and snacks. We sat on a balcony that hung out over the sea, so the waves were breaking right below us. We had a view of the windmills, too. I wish we could have stayed there until the sun set, but that was still a long time off.
On our way back to the ship, we stopped off at a little market for some bottled water and wine, then took a cab back to the ship to have our dinner on board. We left Mykonos at 9:30.
Full day at sea tomorrow.
